Musical Theater at Kids'N Dance teaches vocal, dance and acting skills, in a creative, supportive and FUN environment, culminating in stage performances for each level of study.
Audition Procedure
Beginning Musical Theater: The first day of class children will play acting games. During these games, they will be asked to pretend to be different characters, asked to speak using many different feelings, and asked to memorize one sentence and speak it. Children will be asked to come prepared to sing a verse of a song they prepared. Children may also learn a few lines to a song from the show and will be asked to sing it by themselves.
Intermediate and Advanced Musical Theater: The first day of class each actor will be expected to bring a short song to sing by memory. An accompaniment tape may be used or children may sing accapella (without music.) We may also give each child a question and ask them to talk about their answer in detail or we may have children read from the script and try out different parts.
Character Selection (how we choose your part): This is always the most difficult decision because of the incredible amount of talent that comes through Kids 'N Dance 'N Theater Arts. Parts are chosen mainly on the bases of ability, dedication, and behavior. We also must consider, height, age, if your singing voice is low or high and who else is in the cast. Our theater program is different because lines are spread out among all the characters more evenly. We make smaller roles larger and larger roles smaller, thus giving everyone in the cast a good role.
Expectations: On the second week of class, children will receive their parts and a schedule listing which scenes and songs will be rehearsed from week to week. Actors are expected to learn lines and songs before coming to class. If your child doesn't know his/her lines and songs before their scheduled time to block them, he/she will be holding up the entire play. It is very difficult for a child to learn movement and work on characterization if the lines and songs are unknown to that child. Bring a pencil and your script to every class (Beginning cast, a pencil is necessary only if they can write)
Parental Commitment: Each participant in the program will be required to have an adult who is willing to commit six hours of time to assist with productions.
